100th Anniversary of WWI Commemorative Newsletter

One hundred years ago, on 4 August 1914, Britain declared war on Germany and became part of what would be a global conflict of unprecedented scale and destruction. As commemorative activity to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War culminates with this significant date, we are dedicating this newsletter, and the latest issue of ME & You Magazine, to the subject of the Great War and hope you find the contents illuminating and thought-provoking.

Me & You Magazine

Our special WW1 centenary issue of ME & You is one of a number of ways we are commemorating this important anniversary at Mary Evans Picture Library. With in-depth features on "Dogs of War", Cartoons and Caricatures of WWI and "Knitted Comforts and Marrow Jam", it really is an interesting read. To view a copy online, please click here.

Fields of Battle, Lands of Peace 14-18 Exhibition

The landmark outdoor exhibition, Fields of Battle 14-18 Lands of Peace launches in St. James's Park, London, today with the Duke of Kent in attendance.

This free exhibition tells the story of the war on the Western Front through the stunning and emotive images of Mike St. Maur Sheil portraying the battlefields as they are today.

Mary Evans is proud to represent exclusively Mike's amazing work and to be the main supplier of the additional pictures used in the exhibition. You can view the images from the exhibition and license them here.

And you can see photos of the exhibition being set up here. The exhibition runs until November, so if you are in London, do drop by St. James's Park to see it.

Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red

Over at the Tower of London, the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red exhibition will see over 800,000 ceramic poppies fill the moat, representing each British and Colonial life lost in the conflict. As part of the installation's opening evening on the 5th August, we have supplied wartime images from The Bystander by the immensely talented silhouette artist H. L. Oakley which will be projected onto the Tower. If you're nearby, it promises to be a spectacular sight.

Picturing the Great War

Our WW1 blog, Picturing the Great War, has been running for the past year and is now filled with over 40 fascinating stories inspired by our finds in the archive. To read about dejected dachshunds, Nissen huts, wartime beauty regimes or Great War ready meals, just click here.

Illustrated First World War

The wide-ranging and often unique material on the First World War in the library has translated into some fantastic publishing projects. In the shops now is the Illustrated First World War bookazine produced by ILN Ltd using material from their archive housed and managed here. Recently published books from the History Press based wholly on our content are 'Great War Britain' and 'Profiles of the First World War', while 'Knitting for Tommy - Keeping the Great War Soldier Warm' is due for publication this week. Look out for forthcoming titles on Great War illustrators Bruce Bairnsfather, Fortunino Matania and William Heath Robinson in the coming months. Do get in touch if you'd like to discuss First World War book ideas with us.

And finally ...

... please remember we are adding new images from the First World War to our website on a daily basis, and our archive still holds a remarkable amount of untapped material. We have one of the best collections of WWI material available due to our connections with contributors worldwide supplying us not just with images from the Western Front, but all other areas of the war as well. Do call us if you have a specific picture request and we'll be happy to search off-line. In addition, our WWI timeline helpfully links to pre-edited picture sets marking landmark events from 1914 to 1918.
