Castle Howard highlights The Olympia International Art & Antiques Fair, the prestigious annual London art fair which features everything from Old Masters to classic furniture makers, has as its centrepiece this year a loan exhibition from the magnificent private collection at Castle Howard in Yorkshire. Those of you with long memories may recall that last September’s newsletter introduced our representation of the Castle Howard Collection, and the opportunity to bring these wonderful prints, paintings and drawings to a wider audience. The Olympia fair, running from 5th - 14th June, will include in its display a number of paintings that are available for licensing from Mary Evans. For a preview, click here. And if you’d like to take advantage of a great opportunity to see these works in the flesh, this website contains all the details you need to visit the show. |

Remembrance of things past A small but rather lovely collection of mid-20th century photographs is one of the latest additions to our website. Norman Synge Waller Budd began experimenting with photography in 1940 at the age of 20, and used a variety of cameras including a Rolleiflex, a Super Ikonta, and an Agfa Brownie. His photographs depict a quiet, mostly rural Britain, gentle evocations of people and places in the 1950s and 1960s, or quirky individuals caught in a moment of their lives. The circulating library Last month’s BAPLA Picture Buyers’ Fair was once again a success with over 1500 visitors from Britain and as far afield as Australia, China and Kazakhstan through the doors of the Business Design Centre. Mary Evans Picture Library cultivated a bookish air, as we recreated the library in miniature complete with 360 illustrated volumes from our own shelves, and an array of antique objects including a Davy lamp and a shoe last that more usually adorns the library’s bookcases. To complement this scholarly theme, we ran a book token prize draw, the lucky winners of which were Alice Earle, Jenny Camilleri, Karolina Maroszek, Celia Sterne, Judy Patterson, Maria Ranauro, Tristan De Lancy, Roz Young, Sally Nicholls, and Ruth King. Out of this world Next month marks the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing, fulfilling President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 goal of 'landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth' before the decade was out. Apollo 11 launched from Kennedy Space Center by a Saturn V rocket on 16th July 1969, arriving in lunar orbit three days later. Manned by experienced crew, Commander Neil Armstrong, Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin and Michael Collins, the Apollo 11 mission was the culmination of a decade of intense technological development and testing spurred on by rivalry with the USSR. On 20th July, the lunar module, named Eagle, separated from the command module Columbia and descended to the moon’s surface, prompting Neil Armstrong’s famous line to Houston’s Mission Control Center, 'the Eagle has landed'. Perhaps the most iconic line of all, 'one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind' came shortly afterwards as he stepped on to the lunar surface, followed by Aldrin. The two astronauts spent 21 hours on the moon, collecting lunar samples, carrying out experiments and taking photographs before returning to the Eagle and docking with Columbia, piloted by Collins. By 24th July, Columbia had returned to earth, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean. In the three years following this ground-breaking mission, ten more astronauts walked on the moon, but none has done so since 1972.
