With the nights drawing in, and children returning to school, it seems that autumn is very much nipping at our heels, although we live in hope that we might enjoy an Indian Summer. In the true spirit of 'back to school', September is proving to be an action-packed month for all of us at Mary Evans Picture Library.

We begin to look ahead to 2011 and bring you news of our presence at a number of shows and exhibitions around the globe while we pick the best of the crop taken from a major glut of new pictures from one of our European partners.

Futureheads

For those of you that like to plan well in advance, we have added a full twelve months of historically significant anniversaries to our web site for 2011.

Jean Harlow, Tennessee Williams, Ginger Rogers and Georges Pompidou were all born in 1911, while next year would have also seen Princess Diana celebrate her 50th birthday.

From feats of endeavour to world-changing events, we hope this calendar provides you with inspiration for forthcoming projects.

Making an exhibition of ourselves

Over the next month or so, Mary Evans Picture Library will be exhibiting at three major industry-related events.

First up, is the Brand Licensing Europe Show, held at Olympia, in London from 28th - 30th September, Europe's definitive event for all aspects of the licensing industry. We will be looking to seduce and inspire visitors in equal measure with a vintage boudoir style stand, the perfect setting for the work of 1940s pin-up artist, David Wright. We will be dressing the stand with products using images of his 'Lovelies' but also promoting other fabulous properties such as William Heath Robinson, H. M. Bateman and the National Magazine Company archive which includes Harper's Bazaar. Visit us at stand no E096 to find out how centuries of inspiration from our library can give your products that certain something.

If you'd like to book a meeting at the show, please email luci.gosling@maryevans.com. To find out more, or register for the show, visit www.brandlicensing.eu.

The world's biggest book event, the Frankfurt Book Fair, takes place from 6th - 10th October this year and Mary Evans will be exhibiting in Hall 8.0 at Stand No. L910. Mark Vivian and Tess Watts will be available on the stand for the whole five days, and will be delighted to chat through the latest developments at the library, and to discuss how we can help you with forthcoming publishing projects.

Please email mark.vivian@maryevans.com if you'd like to arrange a meeting in advance.

Finally, Visual Connections, New York's premier event bringing image buyers and image suppliers together, takes place on 13th October at the Metropolitan Pavilion on West 18th St, between 6th & 7th Avenues. Our Managing Director, Paul Brown, will be attending along with picture researcher Lucinda O'Donovan and they both look forward to meeting many transatlantic clients, old and new. Find them at table D1 and find out more at www.visualconnections.com/NY2010

Interfoto

We have recently added over 30,000 images from our German partner, Interfoto, swelling our online offerings with a fascinating and sometimes amusing range of historical subjects.

Not only does Interfoto's bias towards its own country's past mean that our coverage of German history is more comprehensive than ever, but we can also count pictures of British political satire, Egyptian hieroglyphics and French fine art among this latest batch of images, giving a truly global perspective.

Even the briefest browse reveals an eclectic mix of maps, portraits, advertisements, erotica, jigsaws, ephemera, posters, circus acts, fairy tales, magazine art, fashion plates and much more.

We've selected just over a hundred images from this marvellous collection to whet your appetite.

Collections collation

As our web site content continues to grow, we are ever mindful about reminding you of the subjects and specific collections that make up the library.

We have recently spruced up our Collections page, adding ten more collections and arranging them in alphabetical order for ease of navigation. It is now easier than ever to dip into collections like the Grenville Collins postcard collection or the Alinari archives.

A.E.Marty

We have long admired the work of Andre Edouard Marty (1882 - 1974), whose spare, elegant illustrations in publications such as Harpers Bazaar, La Vie Parisienne, Vogue and Femina epitomise the spirit of art deco style.

One of only four artists to be used in the revered pochoir fashion magazine, Gazette du Bon Ton, Marty seems indelibly associated with the hallowed world of fashion illustration. However, like so many talented artists, Marty was nothing if not versatile. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and in 1925 was appointed to the prestigious judging panel of the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, and during his long career designed everything from theatrical costumes to London Transport posters. In our perennial bid to bring you the unusual and unexpected, we have recently added a set of images taken from 'L'Histoire Sainte' by P. de Pitrey, a book of religious stories illustrated by Marty in 1938.

From a luscious and near-perfect Garden of Eden to an unfortunate Jonah swallowed feet first by the whale, these images, executed with Marty's trademark 20th century simplicity, rather skew our traditional view of how Biblical tales should look. Click here to see the full set.
