Our September newsletter comes to you with exciting news about the Brand Licensing show this year, as well as updates on our image collections with new images from the Medici Society archive and the Sharp Illustration Collection. We also have a very special giveaway for our golden anniversary year!

Surf and turf

Are you a pigeon-fancier? Perhaps fish float your boat a little more. Or butterflies. We here at Mary Evans are partial to all three, particularly when they come in the form of beautiful and detailed colour illustrations of different species from the Sharp Illustration Collection which we have recently begun representing.

Our high-quality scans show off these Victorian lithographs at their best. Fancy pigeon breeds from the Illustrated Book of Pigeons (1885) present an unusual spectacle, while A History of the Fishes of the British Islands (1862) depicts a colourful array of marine life. European Butterflies and Moths (1898) completes the set with everything from the death's-head hawkmoth to the purple emperor.

You can view a selection here.

Medici Society update

A brand new batch of images from our representation of the Medici Society are now online. It's an eclectic mix with everything from stunning pencil drawings of lions and giraffes by contemporary artist Julie Small to 18th and 19th century views of London. Nursery rhyme illustrations by fairy-painter extraordinaire Margaret Tarrant, first published in the 1940s, and Victorian genre scenes of children gathering flowers and ice-skating add yet more contrast and variety. Wiff waff chairs and Brand Licensing Europe

Brand Licensing Europe, the definitive event for the European licensing industry, is now in its 16th year, and will be taking place next month at Olympia in Kensington, London from 7th to 9th October.

It's an exciting time for us as we partner with the Bounce Alzheimer's Therapy Foundation who promote table tennis to combat dementia. The BAT Foundation Table Tennis Event in collaboration with D.C. Thomson and Table Tennis England will be taking place on the ground floor over the course of the show, on a custom-made table with two Beano and Dandy players' chairs offering respite to those taking part.

Meanwhile, adjacent to our stand J22 in the Art, Design and Image section upstairs, two 'Homage to Wiff Waff' chairs (wiff waff was an early nickname for table tennis) created by Ashley McDow and Julie Kouamo will be displayed, featuring unique designs with images from Mary Evans. The Wiff Waff chairs will also be on display at top interior design trade show Decorex at Syon Park from 21st to 24th September.

At BLE, we'll be showcasing a number of brands from the Medici Society, the National Army Museum and the Illustrated London News to illustrators Cecil Aldin and Muriel Dawson. Come and visit us on stand J22!

Fields of Battle brochure

The Fields of Battle Lands of Peace 14-18 open-air exhibition has caused a great impact in St James's Park, London, since it was officially opened by HRH The Duke of Kent on 4th August. Michael St Maur Sheil's photographs capture the eerie stillness and beauty of First World War battlefields as they are today and are a powerful reminder of how, a century on, the turmoil of war is still etched into the landscape.

As the exclusive representative of Mike's photographs, we are delighted to be associated with the exhibition. If you are unable to visit before the closing date of Armistice Day, 11th November, you can still buy a copy of the beautiful, 122 page, full colour exhibition brochure from us by mail order.
