Peter Higginbotham Collection

Social historian Peter Higginbotham has long been collecting images relating to workhouses and their bleak, forbidding history, a history embodied in the novels of Charles Dickens. His detailed and extensive collection, exclusively represented at Mary Evans Picture Library, includes vintage photographs and prints, ephemera related to workhouse life and modern photographs of surviving workhouse buildings, providing a comprehensive overview of this significant, if difficult aspect of social history.

His collection continues to grow and now includes many images of other institutions including prisons, asylums, hospitals, lodging houses, reformatories, industrial and approved schools, and a large number depicting children's homes and their inmates.
