John Tradescant the Younger as a Gardener
John Tradescant the Younger as a Gardener. John Tradescant the Younger (1608-1662) lost his position as Keeper of the King's Gardens at Oatlands Palace in 1648; this painting may have been made soon afterwards. He is shown with the attributes of a gardener, holding a spade, with an extensive landscape behind him, probably not, as the inscription asserts, his own garden, but an imaginary park.
