21 August 1996: Archbishop Desmond Tutu and theTibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama walk in to the city hall to deliver the Annual Desmond Tutu Peace Lecture, Cape Town 21 August 1996. It was the Dalai Lama's first visit to South Africa at the invitation to give a speech at the annual Desmond Tutu Peace lecture in 1996. the next day he met president Nelson Mandela. archbishop desmond tutu had retired as Archbishop that year and was to soon to head the Truth and Reconciliation Commission
