April 1955 - The Girl Who Would Not Go To School Again
April 1955 - The Girl Who Would Not Go To School Again - Rather no at all than Bantu says her Congress father. For the Congress girl there will be no more learning at a classroom desk after April 1, when the Bantu takes effect. For 12 year old Elizabeth Gwendu, of Edith Street, Sophiatown, there will be no more school after 1st April. On this day all African will be tranferred to the Bantu Department. And Elizabeth's father, Mr Bob Ngwendu, a member of the Transvaal executive of the African National congress, has decided that his child will not go to a say-baas-to-the-white-man kind of school.
