April 1960 - Unmarried Mothers and their babies - The problem has got plenty to do with politics. That the view of Sydney Matshiqi, a worker in Orlando East, Joburg. Our young fellows can't get jobs and are harassed by cops. So they roam the streets with nothing to do. They meet a girl, and the trouble has started. It's one of our big worries. A baby is born and the father is nowhere around. Trying his charms on some other girl, maybe. Or just keeping carefully out of the way. (Photograph by Peter Magubane @ BAHA)
