Dr Verwoerds walk out from the commonwealth is a severe setback to the whole business and financial structure of the Union. Its political consequences must be tremendous, and will be felt increasingly, year after year. To one group it signal victory, the South Africa politicians in exile known as the United Front. On the 8th, when Dr Verwoerd was shaking hands with Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, it was five to one that South Africa would remain inside the Commonwealth. One week later South Africa was out. How had it happen?
