April 1961 Dr Verwoerds Commonwealth Walk Out Was The United Front's Biggest Victory Gaur Radebe. Ex-A. N. C. now works for the United Front in Tanganyika. Left South Afica during the Ermegency. Dr Verwoerds walk out from the commonwealth is a severe setback to the whole business and financial structure of the Union. Its political consequences must be tremendous, and will be felt increasingly, year after year. To one group it signal victory, the South Africa politicians in exile known as the United Front. On the 8th, when Dr Verwoerd was shaking hands with Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, it was five to one that South Africa would remain inside the Commonwealth. One week later South Africa was out. How had it happen? Those primarily responsible for for the most severe defeat Dr Verwoerd hasd ever met in his whle ploitical career, were a small group of exiles from South Africa itself
