Bush of Ghosts - Life and War in Namibia 1986-1990 -Picnic on the Cunene River. Koevoet families at Ruacana near the border with Angola. 15 November 1987. It was a weekend at Ruacana, a trip of rock and roll, the music of diesel and dust, U2 and the man with the dark voice that everyone seemed to love except me. We slept the Friday night on the riverbank in the blue bus. The next morning we went off somewhere and returned to the picnic scene of some Koevoet families from Oshakati. Soon one of the men ambled over, as those guys have eyes in the back of their heads. He enquired as to our presence. Scientists, I said, that's what we are... ornithologists. He liked that. Birds, you photographing birds? I said yes. He pointed at a cocky hombill perched on the roof of the kombi and eating our fruit. Now what's that? he asked. Mmm... looks like a hombill to me. I passed the test with flying colours. The scene was idyllic, the river then very dry. In the far background lay a town bombed by the SADF who then took a bunch of young hooligan journos to view the victory - one of them being Max du Preez, who then filed for Beeld from Windhoek
