Bush of Ghosts - Life and War in Namibia 1986-1990 - Military parade by D Squadron of the SWATF upon the formation of the interim government, Kaiser Street, Windhoek. 17 June 1985. The SWATF on parade here was formed on 1 August 1980 from Namibians serving as personnel in SADF units, as a measure to combat SWAPO's increasing activity in the fight for independence. Whites, coloureds and Basters did compulsory national service, in a conscription system similar to that of South Africa. The SWATF had eight full-time battalions, including the 201 (Bushmen) Battalion at Omega, and the 101 Battalion based in Owambo. It had motorised and artillery units, as well as parachute and other specialised units. By 1987 it was a 22000-strong militia
