Bush of Ghosts - Life and War in Namibia 1986-1990 - Spent flare used by the SADF, Okatope. August 1988. People in the stuffy room whispered around me, and someone tugged on my arm, pulling me away from the window and into the corrugated wall. Outside long shadows glided by. They circled my red car and felt at the doors. I trembled and mbbed my eyes. What could I do? The old man in the heat of night held his fingers to his lips and beckoned me to be quiet. I held my breath. We listened to hear if they were circling us. My ears strained to hear the cock of a rifle. There was none. After a while I fell back into bed to the whine of 10000 mosquitoes. One was sucking my blood and he died in vain. I longed to smoke. I wiped the sweat from my brow and turned my cushion over. In the distance a faint snore, and the murmur of a child crying
