December 1964 Birth Of A Nation Independence Day, October 24, 1964 Zambians become citizens of the world. Kenneth Kaunda welcomes Queen Elizabeths aunt, the Princess Royal, to the Independence Stadium. In a shower of sparks, Zambia was born. Giant rockets, bursting high, splattered and spumed, the night wind brought down a fiery rain of sparks on the 180, 000 people crowding below in the huge Independence Stadium three times the size of Olympic stadium in Tokyo, everybody told everybody.
