December 1964 Birth Of A Nation Independence Day, October
December 1964 Birth Of A Nation Independence Day, October 24, 1964 Zambians become citizens of the world. Kenneth Kaunda welcomes Queen Elizabeths aunt, the Princess Royal, to the Independence Stadium. In a shower of sparks, Zambia was born. Giant rockets, bursting high, splattered and spumed, the night wind brought down a fiery rain of sparks on the 180, 000 people crowding below in the huge Independence Stadium three times the size of Olympic stadium in Tokyo, everybody told everybody. But those were about the only fire-works evident as, with monumental calmness, Northern Rhodesia became the Republic of Zambia. Simon Kapwepwe, Foreign Minister to-be, showed most emotion.
