December 1967 - Why The War Broke Out? - Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu led Biafra into secession on May 30, 1967, and was promptly dismissed from the Nigerian army. The answer lies right back at the beginning. One of the points that is often forgotten is that Northern Nigeria was one of the few places in Africa that was not especially keen on independence.
