January 1959 - Uganda Enjoys Its Election Fever - Under the tree of liberty: Dr BN Kununka, the secretary general of the Uganda National Congress, played a major role in his party's victory. The results of the recent elections have given politicians the chance of a lifetime to build up party organisation, for a national government, and go on to work for independence. Practically every man and woman outside Ankole, Buganda, and Bugisu had the chance to vote. And about 85 per cent of the people did. The elections were fiercely contested.
