January 1959 - Uganda Enjoys Its Election Fever - Democratic Party Leader: Benedicto Kiwanuka - The results of the recent elections have given politicians the chance of a lifetime to build up party organisation, for a national government, and go on to work for independence. Practically every man and woman outside Ankole, Buganda, and Bugisu had the chance to vote. And about 85 per cent of the people did. The elections were fiercely contested. Religious and political passions were literally aflame. The Democratic Party, suspected of being Catholic dominated, gained most votes, but not the highest number of representatives.
