John Laing (1842-1903). Cape politician; 1861 teacher at Hertzog near Fort Beaufort; appointed to Shaw College in Grahamstown; in 1878 Commisioner of Crown of Crown Lands in J.G. Sprigg's first cabinet. The town of Laingsburg in the Karoo was named after him, 1881. Cape M.P. for Fort Beaufort
