July 1961 - The Kids learn to live - This is no game of follow my leader - to each none of the children it is deadly serious. The are deaf, dumb and blind and this is the way they take their exercise, holding on to each other for safety. This is the story of courage. Unusual human courage mixed with plain, unmitigated Bad Luck. It's the story of 123 boys and girls, some of them deaf, dumb and blind, all fighting nigh and day to make life better than death. They stay in their boarding school-cum home at Kutlwanong in Roodepoort, less than 20 miles from Johannesburg. (Photograph by Ian Berry @ BAHA)
