JULY 1961 - The Kids learn to live - Girls learn to make good wives - Domestic classes are part of the routine for these deaf and dumb girls. They may still marry, later on. This is the story of courage. Unusual human courage mixed with plain, unmitigated Bad Luck. It's the story of 123 boys and girls, some of them deaf, dumb and blind, all fighting nigh and day to make life better than death. They stay in their boarding school-cum home at Kutlwanong in Roodepoort, less than 20 miles from Johannesburg. Yes, that is the story of Kutlwanong. Sounds grim. But it isn't. the kids who live there are perhaps as gay and wild as any other bunch of kids. They are rapidly learning to make their own world tick. A thin, kindly woman, Mrs. Mokhudi teaches them.
