July 1962 - Quiet Big Wedding - Solemn moment for bride
July 1962 - Quiet Big Wedding - Solemn moment for bride and groom on 1st day of wedding. The big wedding turned out to quiet a quiet affair - with far fewer than the thousands of guests who were expected. A late lunch was served - it turned out to be dinner - and festivities (including sacred music) lasted two whole days. Township gossip buzzed about it. This was to be a big show, Chief Tidimane Pilane marrying Irene Ross of Johannesburg. Hundreds of pounds were spent on preparations for the affair, tipped to be the Wedding of the Year'. Then came the first day of the wedding at the Dutch Reformed Church, Meadowlands, Johannesburg. A plush German sports car was provided for the groom and his bride. Guests marvelled at the bride's costly gown with its 1, 000 beads. (Photograph by Peter Magubane BAHA)
