June 1970 - Assassination Bid That Failed - Complete recovery: Obote is wished well on his discharge from hospital. It would have been the most audacious assassination in modern Africa - an unknown taxi-driver killing President Milton Obote while he was surrounded by troops and security guards. But it failed by the narrowest of margins, because a semi-automatic Czech pistol jammed after the first shot, and because a Chinese-made hand grenade failed to explode.
