June 1970 - Assassination Bid That Failed - Obote speaks on his vision of a self-reliant socialist Uganda on the fateful night. It would have been the most audacious assassination in modern Africa - an unknown taxi-driver killing President Milton Obote while he was surrounded by troops and security guards. But it failed by the narrowest of margins, because a semi-automatic Czech pistol jammed after the first shot, and because a Chinese-made hand grenade failed to explode. President Obote suffered minor face wounds when the first bullet ripped through his cheeks, damaging some of his teeth and pat of his tongue.
