June 1975 - JM Kariuki - Man Of The People. In March 1975 Josiah Mwangi Kariuki, a prominent Member of Parliament and ex-Mau Mau detainee was assassinated. A controversial man alive, JM Kariuki proved to be even more controversial in death. In Parliament Charles Rubia, the MP for Starehe, urged the government to disclose the whereabouts of JM Kariuki who was missing at his disappearence was causing all kinds of anxiety and rumour. Meanwhile the mutilated remains of Mr Kariuki were lying unclaimed in the city mortuary after having been taken thre by Ngong police the day after the murder. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)
