June 1977 - Lusaka Welcomes The Big Bear - The KGB man almost smiles as the two president toast the health of Africa and the USSR. but KK was critical of the Soviet role in Africa. President Kaunda, Africa's self-proclaimed arch-humanist gave Soviet President Nikoli Victorovitch Podgorny a warm, effusive welcome at Lusaka for the Russian Leader's African safari. The Red flag fluttered alongside the Zambian flag at the airport and on the road into town. Kaunda Podgorny posters adorned every street corner. And, at the plush intercontinental.
