January was the month of joy and sorrow for the western Region of Nigeria. The month saw the end of the seven-month-long state of emergency the publication of the report of the Coker Commission of inquiry into the affairs of certain statutory corporations the triumphant return of Chief Samuel Akintola, the suspended premier the appointment of Chief Joseph Odeleye Fadahunsi as the new governor, and return of peace- or semblance of it - to the region.
