Marching kids from Naledi Township, Soweto

South Africa, 1976. The Day Our Kids Lost Faith: Soweto Uprising. Marching kids, in a mood common to schoolchildren the world over, were happy to be out of class and good-naturedly protesting against the use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction at their schools. They marched from Naledi Township, at the southwestern end of Soweto, collecting others along their route to Orlando East, the north eastern end of the vast complex. If the police had not tried to snatch posters from the children, if they had not attempted to arrest any of them, if they had not set dogs on them, and if they had not fired shots, June 16 would not have become as black a day as it turned out to be
