May 1967 - Day Of Mourning - Ironsi Is Assassinated -Sir Francis Ibiam, advisor to the military governor of Eastern Nigeria, in deep mourning at the burial of Lieutenant-Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi. It was a solemn occasion, the most solemn that many Nigerians remember. Major-General Aguiyi-ironsi, former head of the federal military government and supreme commander of the armed forces, and Lieutenant-Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, former military governor of Western Nigeria, were killed in Ibadan on July 29, 1966, by mutinous soldiers of the Nigerian army.
