Namibia, Luderitz, Shark Island, 2005: The world's first extermination camp/concentration camp was on Shark Island which was just off the Luderitz mainland. The Island has since been joined to the mainland. Between 1905 and 1907 the Germans interned prisoners caught during the Nama-German war. It was reported that by april 1907, 1032 of the Nama prisoners had died. It is believed that as many as 80% of the prisoners sent to the island died. The picture shows a viw from the island
