October 1952 Masterpiece in Bronze Allison Wessel George Champion, Trade Unionist. He became a police constable in Johannesburg and eventually an organiser of black workers on the gold mines where he worked as a clerk. In 1916 he was elected the First President of the Native Mine Clerks Assonciation and gained recongnition for his exceptional leadership and organisational abilities. Afrter World War I Clements Kadalie formed the I>C>U> (Industrial Commercial Workers Union) causing a stir in the country. Champion was soon appointed General Secretary of the I. C.
