September 1980 - General Election Race Hots Up - FRONASA Leader Museveni - There are now three parties which will contest elections due to take place at the end of September: The Democratic Party, the Uganda People's Congress and the new Uganda Patriotic Movement. Yoweri Museveni, leader of the Uganda Patriotic Movement and vice chairman of the Military Commission and the second most powerful man in the country, has a hero's record after successfully leading his guerrilla army to capture the town of Mbarara in western Uganda during the liberation war which ousted Idi Amin.
