South Africa's only all-black female rugby team from Welkom in the Free State province/ 2001: Two spectators from the township watch the game. One has brought his own portable chair. Usually soccer is the sport played at this ground so it is a bit of a novelty. The Purple Hearts play against the Welkom Police Woman's team. They had one non-white player in their team. The game was played at the Kutloanong stadium in the Kutloanong township, which is part of the town, Odendaalsrus in the Free State mining area. Photograph: Graeme Williams
