The Birdcage
The Birdcage. Tonks developed a personal kind of Impressionism under the influence of Wilson Steer and it is seen to best advantage in his genre paintings before the First World War. The model in this painting was Ethel N. Burford (1883-1944), who sat to Tonks and many other artists. It was exhibited at the New English Art Club in 1907. Tonks, Henry
