John Tradescant the Elder (framed)

John Tradescant the Elder (framed). This portrait is assumed to be posthumous, based on the same source as the portrait of John Tradescant the Elder. It has also been attributed to Cornelis de Neve. The surround, incorporating trophies of fruit and vegetables, with flowers and shells, alludes to Tradescant's interests in horticulture and conchology. The surround was probably painted by another artist, perhaps Alexander Marshal (c. 1610-1682), who painted flowers for the Tradescants. Emanuel de Critz (1608-1665)
