Landscape with Ascanius shooting the Stag of Sylvia. Ascanius, hunting in the Roman countryside, is unaware that his actions will precipitate war between the Trojans and the Latins. The breeze rippling through the tall trees evokes the forces soon to be unleashed on the silver-toned, harmonious landscape. Painted in Rome in the last year of the artist's life for Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna, this poetic work was intended as a companion piece to another landscape by Claude with a scene from Virgil's Aeneid, Dido and Aeneas before Carthage of 1675-76 (now in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg).
