Landscape with a Goatherd
Landscape with a Goatherd. This painting was probably painted around 1635-6, given its close affinity with a landscape in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, signed and dated 1636. Claude's early nature studies provided a basis for the luxuriant wooded landscape. A drawing of the early to mid 1640s in the Ashmolean (Roethlisberger 1968, no. 577) develops, in reverse, the composition and landscape type of this work into a spatially more complex design.
