The official party consisting of, from left to right, Mayor Ken Smith, the Chairman of St. Martins Properties and Mrs. Marjorie Barron the Deputy Mayor, as the latter prepares to break the window of Mitchells Department Store to mark the commencement of the demolition of the Town Centre on the 9th August 1966. The shops in the background are Easiphit the shoe shop and that with the the red overboard is the original Woolworths Store that stood on the site of the present one
