This illustration is a depiction of the Greek mythological story of The Judgement of Paris, this scene represents the goddess of Discord, Eris, holding the golden apple, which she vengefully threw into the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, which she was not invited to, inscribed with a message to the fairest one. The recipient, Paris, had to choose between Aphrodite, Hera and Athena, each promising various perks and gifts, he chose Aphrodite, who promised him the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Troy
