Women WW1 Munitions Chilwell

A Memorial Card to remember England is Gallant Munition Girls who died in the explosion at the National Shell Filling Factory in Chilwell, Nottinghamshire, 1st July 1918. The explosion killed 134 and injured 250 workers. It was suggested that the factory be awarded the Victoria Cross and it was known as V.C Factory'. A poem composed by P.E G. McDonnell, a discharged soldier reads, A sudden change - they in a moment fellThey had not time to bid their friends farewellDeath quickly came without a warning givenAnd bid them haste to meet their God in Heaven'A permanent memorial was unveiled 13th March 1918, and this card probably dates from that occasion
