Abu, Elephantine island, Egypt
Ruins of the ancient city of Abu, on Elephantine island in the river Nile, at Aswan, Egypt. The island was important in the ivory trade from c. 3, 000 BC during the 1st dynasty, and was a defensive site above the First Cataract of the Nile at the border between Egypt and Nubia. It held temples to Thutmosis III, Amenhotep III, Satet, Khnum and Heqaib. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
