Alacahoyuk or Alaca Hoyuk, a Neolithic Hatti and later Hittite settlement founded c. 5, 500 BC, aerial view, near Alacahuyuk village in Anatolia, Turkey. The Hittites settled here 1450-1180 BC and built the Sphinx Gate (below centre). Remains have also been found from the Chalcolithic period, royal tombs from the early Bronze Age and later Phrygian, Roman and Ottoman periods. Picture by Manuel Cohen
