Altar of St Arnir, archbishop of Split, d. 1180, 1770, with sarcophagus containing the saint's remains and reclining sculpture of his body, detail, in the Cathedral of St Domnius, consecrated 7th century AD, formerly the mausoleum of Diocletian, 305 AD, in Split, Croatia. Split was founded as a Greek colony in 3rd century BC, was the seat of Roman emperor Diocletian from 305 AD and was later ruled by Byzantines, Venetians and Dalmatians.
