Altar (right), 1685-89, in the Cathedral of St Domnius, consecrated 7th century AD, built on the mausoleum of Diocletian, 305 AD, in Split, Croatia. The Baroque altar consists of marble inlaid base with 2 angel statues holding tabernacle ciborium, by Mateo Pronzoni. Split was founded as a Greek colony in 3rd century BC, was the seat of Roman emperor Diocletian from 305 AD and was later ruled by Byzantines, Venetians and Dalmatians.
