Apollo Delphinios relief, Delphinion, Miletus, Aydin, Turkey
Relief Apollo Delphinios from the Delphinion, or main sanctuary, Archaic period, dedicated to Apollo Delphinios (Apollo of the Dolphins, protector of ships and harbours), Miletus, Aydin, Turkey. The relief is on a stone block on a round base in the centre of the courtyard, thought to belong to a Roman-era heroon (temple of a hero). Miletus was an Ancient Greek city on the Western coast of Anatolia. Although settlement began here millennia ago, its heyday was in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The city was finally abandoned in the Ottoman era when the harbours silted up. Picture by Manuel Cohen
