Askekarr Ship, Goteborg Stadsmuseum, Gothenburg, Sweden
Central section where the mast was attached, in the Askekarrskeppet, or Askekarr Ship, a clinker-planked Viking knarr, or Norse merchant ship, c. 930 AD, discovered 1933 in a field beside the Gota Alv river, in the Museum of Gothenburg, or Goteborg Stadsmuseum, a history museum founded 1861 and housed in East India House, in Gothenburg, Vastra Gotaland, Sweden. The 13m long ship is made of oak boards fastened with iron rivets and waterproofed with sheep's wool soaked in pitch. Picture by Manuel Cohen
