Ayia Irini figurines, Cyprus Museum, Nicosia, Cyprus

Dedicatory terracotta figurines from the Sanctuary of Ayia Irini in northwest Cyprus, 7th - 6th century BC, in the Cyprus Museum, or Cyprus Archaeological Museum, founded 1882, in Nicosia, Cyprus. The 2000 statues are positioned exactly as they were excavated from around the altar, in 1929. The Bronze Age sanctuary dates from c. 1200-1050 BC and was used until the 6th century BC. The figurines are mainly male warriors with war chariots, demon servants and snakes symbolising fertility. The museum holds archaeological artefacts found on the island from Neolithic to Byzantine times. Picture by Manuel Cohen
