Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, Marseilles

Nave and choir of the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, built 1853-97, designed by Henri-Jacques Esperandieu in Byzantine Revival style, on top of the Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde hill above Marseilles, Bouches-du-Rhone, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France. In the apse is a silver statue of the Virgin, 1829-34, by goldsmith Jean-Baptiste Chanuel after the sculptor Jean-Pierre Cortot. The interiors of the upper church are lined with red and white marble in stripes, with mosaics made 1886-92 in Nimes. Picture by Manuel Cohen
