Ex voto paintings offering thanks to the Virgin, mainly for intervening with shipwrecks and storms at sea, late 19th century, on the wall of the nave, in the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, built 1853-97, designed by Henri-Jacques Esperandieu in Byzantine Revival style, on top of the Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde hill above Marseilles, Bouches-du-Rhone, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France. The interiors of the upper church are lined with red and white marble in stripes, with mosaics made 1886-92 in Nimes. Picture by Manuel Cohen
