Birka Viking Warrior, Birka Museum, Bjorko island, Sweden

Birka Viking Warrior, reconstruction of a female warrior discovered in a 10th century grave, in the Birka Museum at the site of Birka Viking village, founded c. 750 and abandoned c. 975, on Bjorko island in Lake Malaren, Sweden. The chamber tomb contains the skeleton of a female warrior buried dressed in silk decorated with silver thread, with sword, axe, spears, arrow, knife, shield, stirrups and 2 horses, in the style of a great warlord. It was discovered 1878 by Hjalmar Stolpe. Birka was a Viking trading post housing up to 1, 000 people and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
