The Bouleuterion or Odeon, 2nd century AD, Ephesus, Izmir, Turkey. The Bouleuterion housed the meetings of the Boulea or Senate as well as musical performances and concerts. The originally roofed semi-circular auditorium is bonded to a stage wall and seats 1500. In 150 AD, Publius Vedius Antoninus sponsored a new stage building which housed a portrait gallery of the imperial family and the letters of Emperor Antoninus Pius. Ephesus was an ancient Greek city founded in the 10th century BC, and later a major Roman city, on the Ionian coast near present day Selcuk. Picture by Manuel Cohen
